When IdeaFisher software would no longer launch on the new Windows XP and Mac OS X machines, I was in a conundrum: I’d invested many thousands of hours in the program, and in helping the company limp along in its last days. This was more than a potential business I might someday take over. This was what I wanted to do to contribute to the world.

So I grabbed some programmers, geeks who had never seen IdeaFisher, and set them to the task: make an easy to use program that taps on- and off-line databases so people can work through ideas and problems using 6-degrees of separation, aka Associative Thinking.

Here’s where it gets fun: many tens of thousands of dollars later, after thousands of lines of code development, our hired-gun software development team found a limitation of their development platform.

Yup.

It couldn’t handle the millions of searches and associative process needed to provide usable results for our brainstorming engine.

So.. what to do? Do I quit, throw up my hands and try a different tack? Maybe do something else less passionate with my life?

Nawww. Plus I had employees who love this work as well, and wanted to really make it happen.

So I upped my consulting practice to increase revenue, and lo and behold, a miracle happened: a development team from Austin, Texas happened to have a cross-platform solution… and they were geniuses in creating bulletproof applications.

Marsh Fisher would have been proud. These guys know what they’re doing, and could make the idea even BETTER than what we could have thought up.
